21 First Christmas: unexpected conflict

Milton (Poland --> US in 1925):


We arrived just days before Christmas – I never remember anyone celebrating Christmas at home!


There were little glasses, the hollow glass Santa Clauses filled with candy. It was just magical…I thought that was the greatest thing in the world!

Suddenly nine youngsters knocked on our door, teased us and called us ‘greenhorns’.


Most people welcomed us, but the others called us greenhorns.


I was so confused – are we allowed to belong here?
